Low Slope Roofing
Low slope roofing systems or “membranes” have three general classifications:
- Built-Up Roof (BUR) Membranes
- Modified Bitumen Membranes
- Single-Ply Membranes: Thermoplastic Membranes – (PVC, TPO) or Thermoset Membranes – (EPDM)
Most low slope roofing membranes have three definable components:
- Weatherproofing Layer(s): The most important component because it stops water from entering the roof assembly.
- Reinforcement: This component adds strength, puncture resistance and dimensional stability to a membrane.
- Surfacing: This component protects both the Weatherproofing and the Reinforcement from sunlight and weather. Some surfacing components provided additional benefits like: increase fire resistance, improved traffic and hail resistance and increased solar reflectivity. It should be noted; that some roof membranes may have components that perform more than one of these functions.
